Fishing Seasons on Lake Michigan: A Month-by-Month Guide
Fishing in Lake Michigan offers something unique throughout the year, with each month presenting its own seasonal highlights and opportunities for anglers.
January – February
The lake itself quiets down during the heart of winter. However, anglers can find action in the tributaries where Steelhead and Brown Trout take center stage. These fish gather in anticipation of the upcoming spring spawning. As the weather transitions, the excitement begins to build.
March
The dawning of spring kicks off the Steelhead spawning run. Anglers can seek out these silver beauties alongside Lake Trout, which are starting to show up just beneath the lake’s chilly surface.
April
This month brings bustling activity to the southern basin between Chicago and Waukegan. Coho Salmon and Rainbow Trout draw the attention of any fishing enthusiast eager for a good catch, while Milwaukee’s harbor teems with Lake Trout.
May
Spring turns into a vibrant fishing period with opportunities to catch Coho Salmon, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, and Steelhead. Perch also make their appearance, adding a flavorful variety to the catch options.
June
June promises trophy-sized catches as Coho Salmon of impressive weights are abundant. King Salmon draw anglers close to shore, while Steelhead prefer deeper waters. This time of the year can also present Lake Trout weighing up to 30 pounds.
July
King Salmon rove the waters, promising a tackle-testing ordeal. The variety expands with thriving populations of Coho Salmon, Steelhead, Brown Trout, and Lake Trout, all coupled with delightful summer weather.
August
As summer peaks, large Chinooks dominate the scene, accompanied by active Coho Salmon. A bounty of Lake Trout and Brown Trout populate the waters, with Steelhead remaining a prime target for big hauls.
September
The transition into fall creates a picturesque setting on Lake Michigan. Anglers can enjoy targeting Lake Trout around rock-reef structures. Meanwhile, Chinooks, Brown Trout, and Steelhead keep the lines tight. September and October are also noted as the Fall Salmon Run times.
October
Trophy hunters find October particularly appealing. Brown Trout and Lake Trout are ripe for the catch, with the occasional King Salmon adding to the thrill for those willing to brave the cooler weather.
November
Action on the open lake diminishes, but the tributaries offer rich rewards. With Steelhead making bold, acrobatic runs, it’s the perfect time to appreciate the vibrant fall scenery while fishing in the rivers.
December
The lake descends into winter’s calm, but not without leaving an opportunity for a final thrill. Northern Indiana offers excellent Lake Trout fishing near artificial reefs and rock walls. Additionally, Steelhead remain active in the tributaries, wrapping up the year with vibrant catches.
Whether you’re an experienced angler or a newcomer, Lake Michigan provides endless possibilities to enjoy the sport every month. Each season offers distinct challenges and rewards, making it a prime fishing destination year-round.
